I was in the water and my first thought was it was a tiger shark but as it swam closer it kept getting bigger and bigger. I soon knew it was a great white shark! In the water with just my camera between me and the shark, I just started taking as many great white shark pictures as I could as she went by. She just disappeared back off the drop and I was left shaking even thought she was nothing but inquisitive. Great white sharks are intense predators but knowing their behavior and being able to read them I never really felt in danger but am glad I've checked that one off my list! While unnerved and overwhelmed, I never did feel in danger. Quickly observing her behavior I could tell she was just curious and was coming to see what I was doing. Had she wanted to, she could have taken me as food but I guess I just got lucky! Just another reminder to always, always approach marine life with caution and respect. Although the majority of the hammerhead sharks in the schools we see are female there were a couple of males tagging along.I started documenting these hammerhead shark schools in 2006 and have seen this behavior almost every year since. In 2017 I teamed up with James Anderson from the UH SharkLab for some awesome research projects he was doing. Over the years I've learned how to make approaches without disturbing these schools and they seem to accept me as one of the school. As long as I am non-threatening and swimming in the same direction as they are they have no problem swimming right up to me. In this hammerhead shark photo shot at 10mm I was rolling out of the way of the dorsal fin of the shark coming up from below me. For animals that can be disrupted quite easily, its important to swim calmly and quietly. I also highly encourage the importance of being courteous to other boats and approaching the scene carefully and respectfully. These beautiful hammerhead sharks can be easily disturbed and we all want to protect them and conserve their home.
